Built in 1988, the area of the sanctuary was initially under Porbandar Municipality. However, in 1990 the sanctuary was taken over by the Forest Department. After that the Sanctuary was brought under section 18 of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 under Gujarat State Government.
